Basic Function

History of Bakersfield College:
Bakersfield College is located in Bakersfield, California, in the heart of the Central Valley. Established in 1913, Bakersfield College is one of the nation’s oldest continually operating community colleges. The college serves 33,000 students annually on the 153-acre main campus in northeast Bakersfield, at the Delano Campus (35 miles north of Bakersfield), the Weill Institute (downtown Bakersfield), and BC South-West (southwest Bakersfield). We also offer classes at several alternative locations, including Shafter Learning Center, Arvin/Lamont, McFarland, Olive Drive Training Facility, Wasco and other regional community locations.

About the Department, Family & Consumer Education:
The Child Development Department “offers a program of study that integrates theoretical, practical and experiential coursework to develop further understanding of children, families and the processes of teaching and learning.” Completion of its courses enables students to earn degrees and certificates, teaching permits, and prepare for transfer to four-year institutions. The curriculum emphasizes developmentally appropriate practices, curriculum planning from infancy through school age, supporting families with special needs, behavior guidance, active learning through play, health and safety education, program administration, and advocacy on current field issues.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Teaching & Curriculum
  • Teach a range of Child Development/Early Childhood Education courses (e.g., Child Growth & Development; Child, Family & Community; Observation & Assessment; Principles & Practices; Curriculum; Guidance).
  • Deliver high-quality instruction across modalities (in-person, hybrid, online) using culturally responsive pedagogy.
  • Develop, assess, and continuously improve student learning outcomes (SLOs); participate in program review and accreditation activities.
  • Maintain current and standards-aligned syllabi, assignments, and assessments.
• Student Support & Equity
  • Provide regular office hours and academic advising/mentoring.
  • Foster inclusive learning environments; address diverse learning needs, including first-generation, low-income, multilingual, returning adult, and working students.
  • Support students pursuing California Child Development Permits and transfer pathways.
• Program/College Service
  • Engage in department and college governance (e.g., committees, curriculum, hiring).
  • Collaborate with the Child Development Center on practicum placements, observation opportunities, and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Build partnerships with local school districts, ECE providers, and community agencies to expand work-based learning.
• Professional Growth
  • Stay current with ECE/Child Development research, standards, and policy (e.g., play-based learning, trauma-informed practices, inclusive classrooms, assessment).
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and contribute to departmental innovation.

Preferred Qualifications

• Successful community college teaching experience across modalities, including online (Canvas).
• Experience supervising practicum/student teachers and coordinating with lab schools or ECE centers.
• Demonstrated use of evidence-based, inclusive, and culturally responsive teaching practices.
• Familiarity with California ECE standards and frameworks (e.g., Preschool Learning Foundations; DRDP; QRIS; PITC; NAEYC).
• Experience aligning curriculum to Child Development Permit requirements and transfer pathways.
• Bilingual/bicultural competencies serving Kern County communities are highly valued.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s in child development, early childhood education, human development, home economics/ family and consumer studies with a specialization in child development/early childhood education or educational psychology with a specialization in child development/early childhood education
OR –
Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in social work, educational supervision, elementary education, special education, psychology, bilingual/bicultural education, life management/home economics, family life studies or family and consumer studies
OR – The equivalent.
